"Archbishop visits Deseronto Parish"
On Saturday evening November 15, 2008 the Most Reverend Brendan O’Brien made a pastoral visit to St Vincent de Paul Parish in Deseronto. Our pastor, Father Mark, welcomed him. Archbishop O’Brien concelebrated the mass with Father Mark and gave the homily. His Grace apologized for being late and exhorted us to not follow his example. After mass he greeted the members of the congregation personally and then proceeded to the Lion’s Hall for a reception arranged by St Vincent de Paul CWL and other members of the parish. The Archbishop expressed his appreciation for the beauty of St Vincent de Paul Church and altar and commented on the tasteful decorations. Members of the Knights of Columbus were present and formed an honour guard.
The icon of Our Lady of Charity was brought to each of our parishes on the weekend of December 15/16, 2007 by the Knights of Columbus who have sponsored a Marian Hour of Prayer program since 1979. As part of this program the Knights of Columbus distribute pilgrim icons depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary under her various images. An icon travels on a year long journey from council to council in each of the Order’s jurisdictions throughout the world. These Marian icons serve as the focal point for prayer services in many locations. In our parishes the prayer service was conducted during our monthly exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. However, due to a winter storm the prayer service at St Charles Borromeo had to be cancelled.
Devotion to Our Lady of Charity dates to the early 1600s when three young men found a statue of the Blessed Mother holding the Christ Child in Cuban water. As the story has been passed down, the three young men were rowing in search of salt to preserve meat for the copper miners of El Cobre. Halfway across the bay, the young men sought shelter from a storm and encamped for the night. In the morning, they saw a white bundle floating toward them. It was a statue attached to a board that was inscribed with the words, “I am the Virgin of Charity.” A shrine was erected in her honour and devotion to Our Lady of Charity spread throughout Cuba. The Knights of Columbus hope the Marian Prayer Program will bring us all to a greater understanding of the virtue of charity and inspire us to carry Christ’s love to the world around us.
Our tri-parish Knights of Columbus held their annual wine & cheese party in Read hall on December 4, 2007. After mass the Knights and their guests enjoyed a social time with Christmas entertainment provided by Paul & Michelle Kennelly & family and Michelle Forestell. Draws were made for five prizes. Knight Joe McCambridge was honoured in recognition of his 50 years of service. Christmas wishes and gifts were presented to Father Mark who expressed his thanks to the Knights for all their work in the parishes. It was an evening of fellowship and merriment enjoyed by all.
